Misdirected comparison is the worst possible Christmas gift

At this time of the year, more so than any other, people take stock of their progress in relation to where they were this time last year. It saddens me that more men abandon their families over the Christmas period than any other part of the year. They see themselves as failures for not having achieved enough for the ones they love the most so they give up and move on. There isn't enough under the tree or we aren't going on a big holiday like our neighbours. I know the feeling, I've experienced it in years gone by.

The single worst gift you can give yourself and your family this Christmas is misdirected COMPARISON.

As 2016 draws to a close, many of us will reflect on what we have achieved and what still aludes us. There is certainly no harm in reflecting, it's the process we use that determines it's value. We need to practice forward focussed reflection instead of dwelling on a past we have no more control over.

For me this last year has had many highs and lows. My health has been a major issue and running a global speaking and training practice at the same time has been challenging to say the least. There are many things that I had planned to achieve that are still not yet done. A finished book on the neuroscience of leadership, several online programs to get the message out to more people as well as a few other missed opportunities.

On the other side of the ledger my second grandchild was born, I watched my children achieve so much as they pursued their dreams, we partnered with some really great people to help others around the globe and my business revenue increased dramatically. There is so much to be thankful for but I suppose it just depends on what I focus on.

2017 is already heavily booked with more opportunities coming in every day so instead of wasting energy on what might have been, it's best for me to direct that energy into getting ready for what lies ahead.

Instead of comparing myself to last year or what others have achieved, I like to focus on who I have become and what the year has taught me. What can I still work on to become the person I need to be to embrace the fullness of what I have ahead of me in 2017?

Thank you to everyone that has been a part of my journey this past year. I truly appreciate each and every one of you as without you playing your part my journey wouldn't be the same. May peace and unconditional love be your portion this Christmas and my prayer is that 2017 will be your best year ever.

Leave a comment below and tell me what you are thankful for that came from your 2016 and what you are looking forward to in 2017.

Cheers Grant
