The 3 Facets of Leadership

SUMMARY

You are a leader, whether you're just leading yourself, a small team, or an organisation. Leadership is not just a set of skills to tell people what to do; it’s a lot more than that.

This week, I want to set a benchmark around what I believe leadership is and share with you the 3 areas of leadership that I focus on in all the programs I do with clients all around the world which are:

1. Personal

2. Professional

3. People

Therefore, stick with me so you can learn more about yourself -- the skills you need and how you can be a leader that navigates our current environment without all the stress and conflict.

TRANSCRIPT

Do you think that you have what it takes to be a leader? Or are you one of those people who think that leaders are born, not made?

Well, stick with me because what I want to do this month is to unpack this wondrous thing called leadership.

Hi, this is Grant Herbert, Emotional Intelligence Master Coach Trainer and Sustainable Performance Coach, and today I want to start a conversation around “The Three Facets of Leadership.”

For many years, leadership has been relegated to a set of skills that one must have to get other people to do what they want. However, it's much more than that. Leadership is a set of internal characteristics that a person has that is not only there to work with others but to work with yourself. I get to work with people all around the world, and one of the common mindsets some of them have is that they only think they're a leader if they have a team of people they're responsible for.

The terms management and leadership are used interchangeably, and there is a lot of confusion about what leadership is supposed to look like in today's world. There are still teachings and practices that are 20th-century leadership, whether command and control or even in the information age, where things changed. But now we've gone even further -- we've gone way beyond that: We've gone to an age where leadership is different from what it used to be because the environment that we are leading in has changed. It's such a fast-paced environment. Even the term VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) is a little outdated because that was coined as a phrase back at the turn of the century in business.

What is leadership?

Leadership is what we must all possess so that we can thrive and survive in every environment.

For me, everybody is a leader.

You are a leader, whether you're just leading yourself, a small team, or an organisation. Leadership is not just a set of skills to tell people what to do; it’s a lot more than that.

What I want to do this week is start our conversation for this month by setting a benchmark around what I believe leadership is and sharing with you the three areas of leadership that I focus on in all the programs I do with clients all around the world.

There are three facets of leadership:

1. Personal leadership.

This is where leadership starts. This is leading self, just as it says.

Personal leadership is about attributes that you have so you can manage your behaviour and navigate through the journey of life.

It’s all about the internal: your beliefs and your identity.

It's about your emotional intelligence and your social intelligence.

It's all about your intentionality.

It's all about your plans to take yourself from where you are now to where you want to go.

There are certain skills that every one of us needs to have; whether you are in a leadership position or not, it starts with you.

2. Professional Leadership.

These are the skills that you must have to perform in your professional life. It's all about your performance, whether that be high performance or what I rather talk about, sustainable performance. It's about positioning yourself to influence others, move forward in your career and be seen. Then there's your productivity which is about getting stuff done with the resources you have.

3. People Leadership.

This is about taking others on the journey with you. This is being who others need you to be so that they are resourced and have what they need so they can do what you need them to do. This takes a lot of resilience. This is all about building relationships and helping people to achieve results.

People leadership is what most people think leadership is alone. However, before leading people, you must first lead yourself. You also need to have professional skills you'll pass on, demonstrate, and mentor others.

So, those are the three facets of leadership:

1. Personal

2. Professional

3. People

What I want to do over the rest of this month is take you through each facet. I want to show you nine crucial shifts that you need to take so that in your personal, professional and people leadership, you can get the results you want and be who you need to be so that you can be the best version of a leader possible.

Therefore, stick with me so you can learn more about yourself -- the skills you need and how you can be a leader that navigates our current environment without all the stress and conflict.

The world has changed, and it continues to change. It's so fast-paced in how it changes; it's just unrelenting. So, these are skills that every single one of us needs. As I said, it's not about having a team; it's about being human. Every person on the planet is a leader, and that includes you.

Well, that's it from me for this week. Join me again next week as we start to unpack this when we look at personal leadership, which is the foundation.

I'll see you then.
